inflammation

Derived from the Latin word, ‘Inflammatio’, Inflammation is a part of the immune system and often our body’s natural response to heal an injury or fight an infection. It’s like starting a fire!

Its initial role is to signal your body to fight against anything harmful which includes pathogens, irritants and damaged cells. This response often causes one or more classic signs of inflammation namely pain, heat, redness, swelling and loss of function. It can also have an effect on every part of your body- including your hair causing irritation around the hair follicle. It is one of the causes of hair fall among many.

There are two types of inflammation that one should be aware of – acute and chronic inflammation.

Acute Inflammation
Acute inflammation is a short-term response that is limited only to the area that is affected by harmful bacteria or external injury. For example, sore throat from cold and flu, tonsillitis, infected ingrown nail, scratch or cut and acute appendicitis. The symptoms of acute inflammation last for a few days to a few weeks. During this period, the blood vessels dilate, the blood flow increases and white blood cells present in the blood work to heal the wound and infection.

Chronic Inflammation
What happens when the fire isn’t controlled? It grows! Just like Chronic inflammation which lasts for several months to years. It happens when the body isn’t able to break down any particular pathogen or when the body’s immune system is overactive.

Chronic inflammation can lead to:

  • Ageing of skin- caused due to breakdown of collagen & elastin
  • Hair fall- caused due to tissue damage around hair follicle/roots
  • Cancer, depression, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis and various neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer and Parkinson

Because of its severe health consequences, chronic inflammation cannot be taken lightly which is why Ra Defence supplement was created to curb it.
